Further South...

Visa run… back in November (yeah yeah...we're behind again)

Here we go …back on the saddle. But where to go… Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia look good. Twin Towers, call for prayer, Indian food, beaches, mixed cultures: Chinese, Malay, Indian. That’s Malaysia!
Security Cameras, Merlion, Theatre on the Bay, expensive and terrorist paranoia, near the point of getting arrested…we’ll explain later. That’s Singapore! As for Indonesia…nothing. Sit back, grab a cup o’ Joe and listen to the tale.

Malaysia…a beautiful country of mixed nationalities. We decided to take the train…well actually the bus to the train to another train to a ferry then back to a train. With a backpack strapped on...off we went. In the last blog we talked about backpack witnessing. We’ve discovered in our past travels many other backpackers who travel extensively on month’s end and even years, usually never get a witness. So we’ve decided that as fellow backpackers we’ll do our part! We’ve had some great experiences. Just to tell one in a few…we met a young man on the train station who actually approached us. He asked where we were from. I told him we were in Thailand then explained why. He also mentioned he was Christian and was avidly reading the Bible. I asked him which part of the Bible he was reading. Guess what he said...the Book of Isaiah. So I asked “Do you understand it?” Guess what he said…you see where this is going…he said “I can’t understand it until someone explains it to me.” My jaw dropped, a modern day Ethiopian Eunuch in Malaysia. I gave him a track and explained to him that we give free home Bible Studies and left him our email and the Watchtowers website. Let’s see what he does with it.

Among our backpack witnessing we met missionaries from South Africa who after a Biblical discussion, looked at Melissa’s facebook page, on their own private time during their travel and were impressed at the videos from the District Conventions that Meli posted on her page.

Now back to the traveling…we arrived first at Butterworth. We had to wait a couple of hours till our train connection to Kuala Lumpur so we took a ferry into Penang in the mean time. We took a small tour on one of their free bus rides. We ended up in Little India. The food was awesome but we noticed how, of course being a foreigner, the waiter was trying to push us into being the most expensive meals. That changed quickly once we caught on and saw most people ordering from a particular buffet that was more than half the cost. The food was great. We then walked around for the next few hours and back on the ferry to the train. We reached KL in the morning where we made our way to a young couples house who is also doing need great work in the sign language field. What a privilege it was staying with them. There also lived 2 young fleshly sisters from Arizona. How awesome it was to hear their stories on how Jehovah has taken care of them and also the hard work that they are all doing in Jehovah’s service. We had the opportunity to attend the meeting with the Sign Language group. In Malaysia, American Sign Language is used. It’s awesome to see the growth in the English field, sign language field and surprisingly there was also a Nepalese group being started so the meeting was interpreted in three different languages. To our surprise, everyone from the sign group was going to Cameron Highlands…the northern part of Malaysia…to do seldom work territory, which left two rats to play. We were left the keys to the house for the next 3 days with a pool downstairs…only in Jehovah’s organization. We did enjoy touring the city…Petronas Towers, Central Market, Chinatown, Little India…after a cool time in KL, our travels continued.

A four hour bus drive to Melaka…where Bethel is located. We stayed there for two days.
The encouragement we received there was incredible. For a long time Malaysia had been having success in the English Field. Now their focusing on the Malay language. That meant many brothers and sisters serving in the English for years have packed their stuff and moved over to the Malay field…learning Malay language. Rock on for you guys!!! We know how it is!!!

After a good time in Melaka...which has many historical sites and great ambience, I say #1 place to visit in Malaysia.

Now we head off further south…to the squeaky clean, Singapore. What can I say? Let me explain. Remember I mentioned at the point of being arrested (we’re grateful to Lonely Planet for the warning of the security cameras). Meli and I were doing some sightseeing when we got lost. We were walking along the coast in this beautiful park when we noticed the pathway ended. We walked through a patch of grass trying to get out but there was this odd tunnel that was not on our map. So we decided to see if we could go through the tunnel to the other side. When suddenly I remembered about the security cameras that are found everywhere. So we turned around quickly but to our surprise we surrounded by transit police. Thinking we were terrorist they ordered us not to move. We immediately put our hands up. And explained that we were lost. After a brief interrogation, and charges dropped…we were escorted to to the city. So I guess it turned out great after all since we didn’t have to walk there. If you look at it that way. Way to go Singapore…

Now to Indonesia…or not. Nothing to write about because of some technicalities we never made it…sorry Tom, it hurt us not to go but next time Baby!!!

squeaky clean beautiful Singapore

Island off north Malaysia: Pedang

Quite a few things we learned on this adventure. 1. Backpack witnessing pays off. We found a fertile territory that makes our service much more fun. Find your nitch. Like Road trip witnessing, Gas station witnessing, truck stops, camping. Just pick up a backpack and get yourself moving and spread that seed. 2. The International Brotherhood…that’s exactly what it is. It’s incredible how a person who never met you before leaves their home, picks you up, takes care of you as if your family. Just that should impress to you the fact that we’re in the truth. 3. Things usually never work out as you plan so always be flexible and open to adjust as things fall on your lap.

Like always so much to write so little time. We'll post soon with pics on the International Convention in Kenya Africa and our first trip home back to the States. Love to all and Jehovah's blessings be with ya.

Where do we start? Well I guess with our 77th apology for not blogging any sooner. We have been worked to the gills these last few months since we last blogged. Let’s see since last time we came back from our preaching excursion in Phuket. We came back to a whole lot of activities to get us back on the roll of things. We had our Thai District Convention in Surat Thani .

At the Convention we were assigned a few songs to interpret during the program. Despite the fact that I’ve done one before. I was a wreck . Don’t ask me to do any life saving surgery cause I’ll be bloodguilty with the way my hands were shaking due to the nervousness. Now for Melissa it was a different story because it was her first one but she did great. It was also the baptismal song which made it more emotional.

On the topic of emotional what a convention huh?!? If the Governing Body wanted to stir the heart they did more than an awesome job. Oh the tears spilled over!!! We have been to three Conventions so far in three different languages and not a dry eye in the house. Now to get my boots shaking a little more The brother taking the lead for the Sign asked me to serve as Chairman during the program. I said what!!! As Celia Cruz would say my Thai isn’t very good looking!! What am I going to interpret? So I’m thinking to myself that I should have invested a little money on acting classes but thanks to Jehovah it went well. It was a busy Convention. And the Thai Sign Language in the South part of Thailand gets bigger everytime.

Next stop English Convention in Bangkok...I was given the privilege to work with the sound system along side some cool brothers.

Another privilege was extended...a demo in the Convention.

The English District convention was awesome...friends from all over Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Taiwan and other unmentionables. All of them chipping away in their respective territories. Many of them had encouraging stories. On how they learned the truth, how they continue in the truth despite opposition and how they're working in their foreign assignment..so rock on!

Now one cool experience includes one Puerto Rican Deaf who is in Bangkok teaching Sign Language. It's an interesting story...his parents are in the truth in PR but he left when he was younger. He's here on a foreign exchange program where he met some of the deaf Bible Students in Bangkok. He was then invited to the District Convention. During the drama , he was able to watch it in American Sign Language, I noticed that he started crying so evidently it touched his heart! We hope it made an impact. All coincidence... I think not my friends.

Next... Another awesome event. Our first Thai Sign language book study. We have two Deaf girls who regurlaly attend the meetings. We use the Bible Stories book and thanks to Jehovah's help it was a success. One of the girls is progressing so well she now comments in the meeting with the hearing friends. We hope to see more Deaf come to enjoy this great provision from the Org.

We have lots to say.... preaching to Spanish in Bangkok. Nepalese, Hindi, English calls. Visitors from France, Finland and beyond. Trip to Malaysia, Singapore, initiating Backpack witnessing something I'll explain in our next blog. Our lost chance to enter Indonesia. Our trip to Africa and back to America. whoa!!! just thinking about it gets me dizzy! Pray for us and we hope everyone is safe and trudging away in your service to Jehovah in these momentous last days. Stay tuned there is more to come... but a little earlier this time I hope.

Surf Where the Need is Great

About 2 weeks ago a sister from Phuket, Thailand, called our Coordinator of Body of Elders (wow…that’s a mouthful) looking for us to come over to help find Deaf people in Phuket. Based on the consensus, there is about 500 or so deaf living in Phuket. The Circuit Overseer encouraged the friends there to learn Thai Sign Language and hunt around. So we thought it would be a great privilege to lend a hand in that virgin territory so off we went.

Now let me paint a picture for you. Tashi, the sister who called us, is from Texas, USA. She is serving in an English group in Phuket. Which in itself is just extending its own roots. She is a wonderful sister…young, feisty, Texan with Iranian blood…so you could imagine her zeal and youthful vigor. It was contagious and explosive like a nuclear bomb (no puns intended if you’re watching the current news on Iran). She is a great asset to the small group there. For us it was an extended privilege for various reasons…1. We found many Deaf, which we will explain later. 2. We did some English speaking territory (missed speaking a language we fully understand) and 3. We asked 2 recent additions to our small signing group in Krabi, two Japanese sisters (who came to help us with sign) to come with us. So you could imagine this conglomerate group 1. An Iranian Texan 2.Puerto Ricans from the Bronx, New York 3. Two , very proper, shy, quiet Japanese searching for English but most especially the Deaf. So you put those ingredients all together and then BOOM!!! Explosion….

With us we also had other wonderful brothers from Australia, UK, Japan, and a French speaking Italian family. All of them with a lot of experience, desire to serve and love for Jehovah…it doesn’t get any better than that. With some English work done, we headed out to search for the Deaf. On the first day out we met one woman and had a wonderful conversation with her in the city of Patong. Now keep this city in mind. She encouraged us to come back in the evening because that’s when the Deaf come out to work and sell things. So the next day we all decided, 1st the beach then to Preach…and there goes our title. We enjoyed a couple hours of Boogie Boardin’, swimming and catching some rays at one of the beautiful beaches in Phuket.

As the evening approached we headed back to the house and got ready for the ministry…search for Deaf. If you remember the place we were heading to was called Patong. Those who are not familiar with Phuket , as we definitely were not, would have realized that we were about to get a big surprise. We realized that we must have passed Lot, by the gates of Patong, because we walked in to a modern day Sodom and Gomorra. What we’re gonna describe now does not come close to what we saw…drinking, smoking, prostitutes, transvestites dancing on poles, people vomiting in the street in their druken stupor, old men with young Thai escorts…real life Sodom and Gomorra. You could really see why Jehovah needs to bring destruction to this system. But you probably asked yourself, what are we doing there? Well, in the first 30 minutes we found 8 Deaf, with good results. While we were searching for more, what kept creeping up in our minds were the poor Japanese sisters…in shock! Since Japanese are much more conservative. But they handled themselves well. With such positive turnout , we decided to head back again, after the meeting ,the next day. With more positive results. We ended up meeting 10 more. 3 of them where tourist from Sweden but were Iranian…so they got along well with Tashi...go figure! As you can see, there is so much work to be done in all Thailand…any volunteers!!!!!

By the way...the Bible reading went well...thank Jehovah and thanks for all your prayers!!!
